12 Photo Challenge

Part I

I think that my most successful photo from this challenge was the black and white photo that I took at the Billy Joel & Stevie Nicks concert. I usually shy away from black and white photography because it sometimes feels cliché and unnecessary, but for this instance, I think that it really helped to dial back some of the chaotic colors of the crowd. I really like the way that the smoke from the smoke machines and the stage lights were highlighted in black and white. Although they could still be seen with color, I think that black and white allows emphasis of the smoke and lights of the stage in contrast from the sea of people.

For me, the most challenging part of this assignment was trying to diversify the subjects of my photos. I ended up with a lot of pictures of flowers and dogs because that is what I had available. I also love flowers and dogs, but I did try to explore other subjects when I got the chance. In the future, I think that I will have better access to a better variety of subjects, but I will also try to use the techniques that we have covered in the lectures for this project to get more comfortable with them. That way, I will be able to take more creative photos in the future. I think that if I can get more experience with the techniques that we have covered in the lectures, I will be more comfortable taking pictures of everyday subjects like my dogs or flowers.

Part II

Hey Drew! I really like the contrast between the complexity of the city and the vast, relative simplicity of the ocean and sky, which act as negative space. The different colors visible in the city also add to that contrast.

I get a feeling of safety from this photo looking out at the ocean from the city. I associate a sense of adventure and unknown with the ocean, and I get the feeling that the city is permanent, fortified, and safe in a way.

I think that this picture could look really dramatic if it were taken during golden hour. Judging by where you might have taken this picture from, I do not know how feasible that would have been in this case, but I think that would add to the image nevertheless.
